An Overview of PBAT: Popular Science on a Material in Degradable Plastic Bags

Published: 2021-10-22 23:11:00

PBAT is a type of biodegradable plastic material. It is an aliphatic/aromatic random copolyester with a tailored macromolecular structure. Its monomers are: adipic acid, terephthalic acid, and 1,4-butanediol.

PBAT can be used to produce agricultural films and degradable plastic bags. It can also be blended with recycled raw materials such as starch for applications—for example, corn starch shopping bags, corn starch garbage bags, and corn starch pet bags are all made with PBAT blended with corn starch as the main raw material. PBAT is specifically designed for food packaging, especially for high-grade food or green food.

Fully biodegradable plastic PBAT complies with the German DIN V 54900 standard (Germany is one of the countries in Europe with the strongest requirements for plastic ban. For products from other countries to enter the German market, their packaging bags must be biodegradable. The use of non-degradable bags such as PE bags and CPE packaging bags will result in failure to enter the German market); it also meets the European standard DIN EN 13432 and has passed the testing and certification of Japan's biodegradable material GreenPla system. It can degrade within a few weeks in soil or composting environments without leaving residues, and can replace existing general-purpose plastics.

PBAT has excellent processing properties and can be made into various films and food containers. The performance of PBAT films is similar to that of low-density polyethylene (LD-PE) with elasticity, and they can be processed on equipment used for LD-PE processing. PBAT can be used to coat foamed starch food containers, improving their tear strength and moisture resistance, as well as providing oil and water resistance. PBAT also has good printability.
