What Is a Degradable Takeaway Bag?

Published: 2020-05-22 18:03:00

Hello everyone! Today we are going to introduce what a degradable takeaway bag is. First, we need to understand the meaning of "degradable"—the aging and deterioration of plastic is a degradation phenomenon, and such waste will gradually disappear and decompose later. As we all know, plastic is difficult to decompose. Unless burned, it will exist permanently. This is not environmentally friendly for cities and causes pollution.

Nowadays, the plastic bags and takeaway bags on the market are all degradable. Reducing garbage and pollution is a very good approach. Next, let's talk about degradable takeaway bags. Generally, there are three types of degradable takeaway bags, namely:

1. Microbial fermentation method: Many microorganisms can use certain organic substances as carbon sources. Through metabolism, they secrete and produce polyester and polysaccharide polymers. These molecules are not only easy to degrade but also can be further recycled and reused.

2. Chemical synthesis method: Simulating the structure of natural polymers, starting from simple water molecules, active groups such as amide groups, peptide groups, and ester groups are attached to the polymer chains of plastics. Compounds containing these groups are similar to structural fragments of natural proteins and oils, making them easily biodegradable.

3. Natural polymer modification method: Using natural polymers such as starch, cellulose, chitin, lignin, and seaweed as raw materials, these molecules are modified through chemical modification and copolymerization methods to synthesize biodegradable plastics.

At present, a new type of degradable plastic for takeaway bags has been developed in China. Its composition is synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, starch, and photosensitizers. Polyvinyl alcohol itself is easier to degrade than polyethylene. Adding photosensitizers can accelerate plastic degradation by absorbing sunlight, and starch can promote the biodegradation rate of plastic in soil. Therefore, this new type of degradable plastic is easier to degrade than the previous ones. Moreover, after degradation, the plastic components decompose into substances with simple molecular structures such as carbon and water, which are more environmentally friendly. In the future, the application of degradable takeaway bags will become more and more widespread.
