Conditions Required for the Complete Degradation of Fully Biodegradable Plastic Bags

Published: 2020-07-14 18:51:00

It is well known that biodegradable plastic bags can decompose in nature, but complete degradation requires meeting certain conditions. Let’s explore these necessary conditions with Sayru Technology!

Traditional plastic bags made from polyolefin materials cannot decompose in the short term. Through research, a series of polyester materials degradable by microorganisms, combined with green materials extracted and synthesized from renewable resources, have been developed to produce truly biodegradable plastic bags. Currently, a common practice in the market is adding starch and other biodegradable additives to packaging materials to enhance degradability. Biodegradable free-resin plastics maintain sufficient strength and shape stability after cooling. However, fully biodegradable plastic bags must meet the following specific conditions for complete degradation:

  1. They must be fully degradable, breaking down into carbon dioxide and water as final products;
  2. They must achieve complete degradation within 180 days under industrial composting conditions;
  3. No toxic substances harmful to the environment shall be produced during or after degradation.

It is also important to note that each biodegradable material requires specific environmental conditions for degradation. In the absence of suitable conditions—especially the necessary living environments for microorganisms—degradation will proceed very slowly. Furthermore, not all biodegradable materials decompose rapidly under all environmental circumstances. Therefore, the evaluation of a biodegradable material should be based on its required environmental conditions, combined with an analysis of the material’s own structure, to determine its true biodegradability.
