Many people who see stretch wrap may mistake it for an oversized food wrap. While polyethylene stretch wrap and food wrap are similar in material, they differ significantly in usage, specifications, and production processes. Today, we will explore the adhesion performance of polyethylene stretch wrap.

Polyethylene stretch wrap requires excellent adhesion: Polyethylene itself provides good mechanical strength, outstanding elongation, and superior resilience to the film but lacks sufficient surface adhesion. Therefore, polyethylene stretch wrap needs to be coated with tackifiers to achieve the desired surface stickiness.
In industrial applications, common tackifiers for polyethylene stretch wrap include low-molecular-weight polyisobutylene (PIB) with a density below 0.905, very low-density polyethylene (VLDPE), and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). Few manufacturers use EVA due to its pungent sour odor during processing, high cost, and poor cost-effectiveness. VLDPE offers good flexibility, high adhesion, and strong puncture resistance but is less practical due to its low cost-performance ratio. As a tackifier, PIB features a wide viscosity adjustment range and comprehensive price advantages. PIB and its masterbatches are currently the most commonly used tackifiers in polyethylene stretch wrap production. Due to their incompatibility with polyethylene, they gradually migrate to the film’s surface to generate adhesion.
The adhesion required for stretch wrap includes good peel adhesion and lap adhesion. Higher peel adhesion means the palletized load is less likely to disperse, and the film’s sealing performance is better. Higher lap adhesion reduces the risk of longitudinal displacement of the stretch wrap. Therefore, to achieve secure packaging, a balance between peel adhesion and lap adhesion of the stretch wrap is essential.
